Music Collection from the Department of Musicology
The collection from the Department of Musicology in Fribourg was fully inventoried between 2022 and 2025, catalogued in Muscat, and made accessible via RISM-Online. This music collection stands out for its rich and diverse content. It includes manuscripts, printed editions, and various fragments. The repertoire ranges from masses and liturgical works to secular songs, opera excerpts, theoretical writings, and handwritten notes by former professors of the institute. Although the provenance of many items could not be clearly established, several noteworthy origins have been identified. These include figures of particular significance for Fribourg, such as Franz Xaver Zürcher (1773–1846), Jacques Vogt (1810–1869), Ferdinand Rüegg (1884–1970), Francis Lombriser (1901–1980), and Peter Wagner (1865–1931), the department’s first chairholder.
The collection reflects the history of the Department of Musicology at the University of Fribourg and offers deeper insight into the region’s musical and cultural heritage.
An important component of the project involved integrating materials from a preceding project EBAZ (2018-2021). Research revealed that this collection includes content (e.g., individual vocal parts) from the EBAZ collection.
All sources catalogued in Muscat are available via RISM-Online or in the full inventory on Fri-Memoria.
